What we are doing in our School
In our school, years 5 and 6 did an integrated unit on 'Can I Make A Difference In My Environment'. As a group, we did a project about plastic bags. We decided to make a website as that is one of the best ways for people to become aware of plastic bags. Another way we thought of making people aware is by using 'Plastic Pinchers' (a reaching and grabbing tool) to get people to use them to pick up plastic bags. We think that if making picking up rubbish fun, more people will do it (especially children). We want to see how much the junior school uses in one week.
Our group cut a hole in a garbage bin an placed a window in the hole so that kids could see how much rubbish they collect over a day and then also, over a week. We also supplied them with plastic pinchers...see the picture below.
It was amazing to see how much plastic the students collected in one day! Have a look at the photos of how much plastic our school collated over a week. We are very excited to think that none of this plastic is going to make it into the stomachs of turtles, onto our beaches or end up in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (go to the "how does this affect our world" section on this website to learn more about the GPGP).
Imagine the difference we could make if we reduced the amount of plastic we brought to school!
